Set Up Your Practice
Meditation is a life-long journey, but how do you start? Here are some tips:
Essential Tips
Consistency is key
Mindfulness meditation changes your neurochemistry. But in the beginning, the changes are subtle and easily reversed if you stop practicing.
5 minutes of practice every day* is always better than 100 minutes of practice once per week.
Pick a time and place
Habit science says you’re more likely to create a consistent habit if it’s done at a similar time and in a similar place every day.
It’s best to find a supportive cushion with enough height and firmness to keep you comfortable for at least 10-15 minutes.
Don't be discouraged by thoughts
Even the most advanced meditators spend a lot of time lost in thought. The object of mindfulness meditation is NOT to make your mind quieter. It’s to make your mind more aware of how it functions, and thoughts are part of the mind!
Be kind to yourself
When you start meditating, it’s easy to get frustrated. Be aware of the tone of voice you use with yourself internally, and cut yourself some slack. You’re learning a new skill, and it’s not easy.
Every day, you say?
Believe it or not, yes. That’s what we strongly recommend for reasons stated above. Anyone can find 5-10 minutes in their day, it’s just a matter of prioritization. How important is it to you?
